A pop-up city book that glows after dark

Open the lid and a city stands up under the moon. Close it, and the whole city folds flat inside.

Closed, it looks like a book: 8.1 × 6.7 × 2.5 in. Scroll to wake it.

Press the brass button on the front edge. The latch lets go, two torsion springs lift the lid, and a gear damper keeps it slow.

A parallelogram linkage on each side lifts three rows of New York with the lid. They stand up together and are upright when the lid reaches 90°.

The lid turns into a night sky with a moon, a purple horizon and 60 stars. Then you turn the room lights out.

Every window and star glows in the dark. No batteries, no wires.

It arrives finished and assembled, with New York mounted and ready to open. Press the brass button and the lid lifts into a night sky with a moon and 60 stars.

No batteries, no wires, no switch. After a lamp has charged them, the windows, stars and lamps glow brightest for 30 to 60 minutes with the room lights out.

Lift one off, drop the next on

Each row clicks onto its frame with two magnets and two V-keys. Lift it straight up and it comes free.

Once the three rows are off, lift the harbor plate out of the tray.

Drop in the next city's plate. Here it is Paris, with its boat on the Seine.

Set the rows on, back to front. The grooves slide over the keys and the magnets pull each row home. One book takes any city: a London, Paris, Tokyo, San Francisco, New Orleans or Los Angeles pack clicks on where New York was.
