A city pack for the Moonlit Atlas book
Beijing
You enter this set on foot. A white stone bridge climbs out of the lake at the front and sets you down in a hutong lane, with the palace's red wall and golden roofs stacked behind it and the Great Wall on the ridge above. Put it in your Moonlit Atlas, press the brass button, and Beijing stands up as night falls.
The Moonlit Atlas book, closed: 8.1 × 6.7 × 2.5 in. With this pack, Beijing is what folds flat inside it. Scroll to open it before dark.
Press the brass button. Two torsion springs lift the lid, a gear damper keeps it slow, and three rows of the city stand up with it, upright at 90°.
Beijing starts at the water. A lake fills the tray, with a red dragon boat, lily pads and a pink lotus on it, and a white stone bridge rises from its front edge on one round arch.
The bridge steps down into a hutong lane: a painted archway on red posts with two stone lions under it, grey-brick houses with red doors and lanterns, a bicycle, a rickshaw, a plum tree in blossom, and a panda with its bamboo.
Behind the lane stands the palace wall, red under a golden coping, with arched gates set with gold studs and a tower at each end. Over it, the great hall's double golden roof on a white marble terrace.
At the back, the hills. The Great Wall climbs the ridge with its two watchtowers, the Temple of Heaven stands under three blue roofs, and the Bird's Nest sits silver beside it.
Lights out. Windows glow in the hutong houses, along the great hall, in the corner towers and up in the watchtowers on the Great Wall. They glow in the dark: no batteries, no wires.
