A city pack for the Moonlit Atlas book
Las Vegas
The Strip in the middle of the desert, on one shelf: the STRAT's needle over the Luxor pyramid and the dotted Sphere, with Excalibur's turrets and the High Roller wheel in front. Put it in your Moonlit Atlas, press the brass button, and Las Vegas stands up under the moon.
The Moonlit Atlas book, closed: 8.1 × 6.7 × 2.5 in. With this pack, Las Vegas is what folds flat inside it. Scroll to open it at dusk, as the desert goes dark around the Strip.
Press the brass button. Two torsion springs lift the lid, a gear damper keeps it slow, and three rows of the city stand up with it, upright at 90°, the needle of the STRAT highest of all.
The STRAT: a slim white shaft on splayed legs, a dark pod ringed with windows and a needle over the whole set. Beside it the dark Luxor pyramid with its sphinx at its foot, and the bronze Wynn, its roof curving down to one side.
To the right, the cream Bellagio under its small teal cupola, the dark Sphere studded with dots, and Excalibur's castle towers under red, blue and gold cones.
One row down, the High Roller wheel stands in front of the pyramid. Then the Venetian's brick bell tower and its white Rialto bridge over blue canal water, Caesars Palace under red roofs, palms, and a red rock mesa at the end of the row, where the desert begins.
On the boulevard, palms, lamps and hedges run the whole row, low cream and pink shops under striped awnings stand at both ends, and a pink convertible cruises past, all kept low so the resorts behind stay in view.
At the front, the lake fills the tray in blue. Two arcs of fountain jets rise from the water beside a cream stone balustrade, and a black gondola glides past at the left, its gondolier in a red-and-white striped shirt.
Lights out. The STRAT's pod, the Wynn's strips, the Bellagio's windows, the Sphere's dots, Excalibur's windows, the High Roller's rim, the bell tower, Caesars, the shop fronts and the tips of the fountains all glow, and the moon and stars come out over the desert. They glow in the dark: no batteries, no wires.
