A city pack for the Moonlit Atlas book

New York

The classic way into New York is by water, past Liberty, so this set starts there: her torch raised over the harbor, a ferry and a tug crossing, then brownstone stoops, the Brooklyn Bridge and the skyline under the moon. Put it in your Moonlit Atlas book, press the brass button, and sail in.

The Moonlit Atlas book, closed: 8.1 × 6.7 × 2.5 in (206 × 170 × 63 mm). The book is sold separately; with this pack, New York is what folds flat inside it. Scroll to sail in.

Press the brass button. The lid lifts slowly into a night sky with a moon, and New York's three rows stand up with it, upright at 90°.

In by water. Liberty stands on her star-shaped fort at the corner of the harbor, torch raised, and a white ferry and a small tug work the water beside her.

Ashore, a block of brownstones: stone stoops under lit parlor doors, bracketed cornices, and a yellow cab waiting at the curb.

Behind the block, the Brooklyn Bridge: two stone towers with pointed arches carrying the cables, and Midtown's grey-blue towers with water tanks on their roofs.

At the back, against the moon: the spire of One World Trade Center, the Empire State Building's mooring mast, and the Chrysler Building's crown of arches.

Lights out. Windows glow from the brownstones up to the Chrysler crown, and Liberty's torch shines over the harbor. They glow in the dark: no batteries, no wires.

Seen from the water

Picture New York and you picture it from the water: the towers rising behind the harbor, and Liberty out in front with her torch up. So this set is laid out the way the ships see it. The harbor lies in the tray, nearest your hand. The brownstone block stands right behind it, the Brooklyn Bridge behind that, and the skyline rises at the back against the book's moon.

Paris off, New York on

Say your book holds Paris. Each row clicks onto its frame with magnets and V-keys. Lift it straight up and it comes free.

Once Paris's three rows are off, lift its river plate out of the tray.

Drop in the New York harbor: Liberty on her fort, with the ferry and the tug on the water.

Set the New York rows on, back to front. The grooves slide over the keys and the magnets pull each row home. Paris goes back on the same way whenever you want it.
