A backgammon board folds in half: two tables, a bar down the middle, a hinge across it. This one is a disc. The 24 points are 24 lanes cut into a 190 mm sun, the bar is a hub in the middle, and the race runs all the way round.

No hinge, no bar.

A folding board splits 24 points across two tables. This is one piece: 24 lanes standing 0.8 mm proud of the floor, running out from a 48 mm hub to a rim 190 mm across.

The opening position.

15 counters a side, 30 in all, in the same places they start on any board. A lane is 63.5 mm long and a counter is 12 mm, so the longest stack sits five nose to tail with the outermost against the rim.

Cut, not printed on.

Lanes 0.8 mm proud, grooves 1.6 mm wide, and four small studs set in the grooves where the quadrants divide. Nothing here is paint or inlay, so there is nothing to wear off the face.

Told apart by the tail.

One side ends in a fork, the other in a point — same 12 x 8 x 4 mm footprint, different outline. In one filament, as here, the two armies still read apart across the table.

Both dice under one cup.

A cup is 42 mm across with a 38 mm bore; two 16 mm dice stand 32 mm side by side, so they shake under one cup and land inside the 48 mm hub.

Five, then three.

The five crosses the division where a folding board carries its hinge; here it is just the next lane. The three runs a counter off the end of the numbering and straight on round, because on a circle there is no end to run off.

Two armies, one spool

Colour is the usual way to tell backgammon sides apart. These two are cut to different outlines as well, which makes the colour optional.

15 counters end in a forked tail. 15 end in a single point. Both are 12 x 8 x 4 mm and both lie flat, so a stack of five fills its lane the same way either side of the board.

Print each side in its own filament for the usual look. Print the whole set in one and nothing is lost: the outline is doing the work colour normally does.

  • Forked tail. 15 counters at 0.34 g, plus the cup and die that go with them.
  • Single point. 15 counters at 0.28 g, and the other cup and die.
  • The board. One piece, 5.2 oz of it, and the only part that needs a plate of its own.

What the disc is made of

Every figure below was measured off the shipped mesh — the lanes, the hub, the moat and the studs, in the positions they print in.

  • 24 lanes

    15° apart and 63.5 mm long, each standing 0.8 mm above the floor with a 1.6 mm groove either side.

  • 48 mm hub

    A raised disc at the centre, doing what the bar does on a folding board. Both dice land on it with room to spare.

  • 2.5 mm moat

    The open capture circle: a ring around the hub dropped to floor level. Every lane groove runs into it, so the recess is one connected shape.

  • 4 studs

    Set in the grooves six lanes apart, marking the same four divisions a folding board gets from its bar and its hinge.

  • 16 rim nubs

    The rays. 180 mm across the flats, 190 mm across the nubs, and 17 mm thick all the way out.

Two plates, no supports

The board takes a plate to itself. Everything else — 30 counters, 2 dice, 2 cups — goes on the second one together.

The board, on its own

190 mm across, which clears a 200 mm bed by 5 mm on each side. 10 h 34 m and 5.2 oz of PETG, flat on the bed with nothing overhanging.

Everything else, together

30 counters, 2 dice and 2 cups in one run: 3 h 37 m and 1.3 oz. The cups are the tall part at 28 mm, printed as 2 mm walls straight up.
