The plaque on a pale bedroom wall above a small wooden bed: a cream moon in a white nightcap, navy sky, little stars, white clouds along the bottom

Stars Say Goodnight

A sleeping moon by day. At lights-out, it tells them you love them.

A picture by day.

A sleeping moon in a white nightcap, a navy sky, 7 stars and two banks of cloud. A small picture with a secret for bedtime.

Everything stands proud.

The cap, its band and the pompom sit in front of the moon, and the clouds in front of its foot. The moon's 3 craters dip into its face, and the closed eyes and the smile are inlaid in navy.

The words are already there.

Cut away the moon's face and you find 42 rows of shallow slots. 231 of their floors are glow-in-the-dark and spell the message. The rest are white, cut exactly the same, beneath the moon’s continuous surface.

The bedtime story charges it.

Lamp light passes through the moon's thin skin and charges the glow floors underneath. Daylight in the room does the same.

The room lights went out.

Nothing on the plaque is powered: no battery, no bulb, no switch. The glow floors give back the light they took in, through the moon.

Love you to the moon & back.

4 lines, 20 letters, in the moon the child fell asleep looking at. Brightest right at lights-out, then fading as the glow gives back its charge.

6.7 × 6.7 × 0.3 in and 3.8 oz. It hangs on a screw by a keyhole behind the cap, or leans on a shelf by the bed, low enough to see from the pillow.

Where the words hide.

The message sits beneath the moon’s face. This diagram reveals the hidden pattern. Turn down the room lights to see which floors glow.

The slot floors under the moon, seen from the front
  1. 42 rows of slots

Every row under the moon is cut the same way, edge to edge, whether a letter passes through it or not.

  2. 231 glow floors

Where a slot crosses a letter its floor is glow-in-the-dark PLA. Everywhere else the floor is white.

  3. A 1.6 mm skin over all of it

An ivory layer under a cream face covers the pattern while letting the glow shine through.

A gift that waits until bedtime.

  • Under the tree

Unwrapped on Christmas morning, it is a sleeping moon. The message only turns up that night, when the lights go out.

  • At story time

The lamp stays on while you read. When the room goes dark, the moon has its own goodnight to give.

  • A first big-kid room

For ages 3 and up: something to look at after the door is pulled to.

Good to know

Does it need batteries or a plug?

No. The words are glow-in-the-dark PLA that stores light while the room is lit and gives it back in the dark. There is no battery, bulb or switch anywhere in it.

How do I charge the glow?

Leave the lamp on through the bedtime story, or let daylight reach it during the day. A phone torch held to the moon for 30 seconds also works.

Where is the message hidden?

Under the moon’s surface. Glow-in-the-dark floors spell LOVE YOU TO THE MOON & BACK beneath the face, beside matching floors in white.

How does it hang?

On a #6 pan-head screw (not included). Drive it in with a coin's thickness left under the head, slide the keyhole behind the cap over it and push the plaque down; it hangs level. It can also lean on a shelf.

What is it made of?

PLA, in 4 colours: navy for the sky, ivory white for the cap and clouds, desert tan for the moon and stars, and glow green for the hidden words.
