About Autonomous office chairs

We ship two chairs because lumbar support is the part of an office chair that goes wrong most often. The pad sits in the wrong spot. Or it sits in the right spot for one posture and fights you the moment you shift. ErgoChair Ultra 2 solves this by removing the pad — the exoskeleton frame supports the spine across its full length. ErgoChair Pro keeps the adjustable lumbar for people who already know where they want it.

Who an Autonomous chair is for

Engineers, designers, indie hackers, founders, traders, writers — anyone whose workday is a long stretch at one desk. The tilt and armrests are tuned for typing and reading posture. Not for short meetings. Not for a 30-minute call. Sit three hours a day, almost any chair works. Sit ten, the chair becomes the longest contact surface in the setup. That's the use case we built around.

How we think about pricing

The ergonomic chair market splits roughly into three tiers. Big-box mesh chairs sit around $150–$300 — they get you sitting, not much beyond that. Premium ergonomic chairs from the legacy office furniture category sit at $1,200–$1,800, with sized fits and decade-plus reputations. Autonomous sits between. What we don't do: sized fits, decade-old design heritage, procurement-grade pricing. What we do: ship a chair that adjusts to a wider range of bodies and gets the spine well-supported, at a quarter of the premium-tier price.

Where the chair fits the rest of the setup

The chair is one surface in a setup built for long work sessions. Pair an Autonomous office chair with a standing desk for a sit/stand cadence across the day. The chair handles the sit hours.

FAQs

The back. Ultra 2 is lumbarless — the exoskeleton frame supports the whole spine. Pro has an adjustable lumbar pad you slide to your preferred spot. Italian tilt, mesh back, aluminium base, lifetime warranty — same on both.

Ultra 2. The exoskeleton back extends further up the spine. Pro also fits up to 6'3" and adds an adjustable headrest, so if neck support during long calls matters more, Pro is the call.

Ultra 2 rates to 320 lbs. Pro rates to 300 lbs. Both use a reinforced aluminium 5-star base.

Yes. Both models qualify through Truemed. With a letter of medical necessity, the pre-tax saving works out to around 30%. See our HSA/FSA page for details.

Lifetime on the frame for Ultra 2 and Pro. Mechanism, casters, and upholstery have separate coverage — see the Warranty Policy.

30 days. Sit in the chair at your actual desk. If it doesn't fit, send it back. Full terms in the Trial & Return Policy.

A lot of people who buy one report it does. We don't claim it as a medical outcome — a chair isn't a medical device. If there's a diagnosed condition, talk to a clinician first.

10–15 minutes for one person. No special tools — everything needed ships in the box. Video walkthroughs are above on this page.

Heat. Over a long session the back of a foam-and-fabric chair traps body heat against the spine. Mesh vents it. The other reason is structure — mesh holds shape over years of daily use; foam-backed chairs eventually pack down. The seat is contoured foam on Pro and 4-layer construction on Ultra 2 — that's where pressure relief matters more than airflow.
