The 5 Best Ergonomic Office Chairs with Lumbar Support

Most of us don't give much thought to the chairs we use for office work despite the fact that we spend nearly half the day on one. According to a 2014 study, an ergonomic office chair with lumbar support can help reduce the stiffness in the back and alleviate muscle soreness, which is why it's crucial to invest in a good seating solution.

At the studios, we were facing similar problems. Our team members complained about the back pain they were experiencing, which prompted us to order a couple of chairs to test them out.

We tested out a wide range of ergonomic chairs. In this article, we will go over the top five office chairs that have earned the title of the "best desk chair with lumbar support." Let's get started!

1. Autonomous ErgoChair Plus

After months of searching for the best chair with lumbar support, we came across the Autonomous ErgoChair Plus. Since we've already tried some products from Autonomous, we had high expectations from the ErgoChair Plus.

Once the package arrived at our studio, we were excited to try the ErgoChair Plus to find out whether it is the best ergonomic office chair. Here is our detailed review on the product.

Build Quality

The Autonomous ErgoChair Plus offers solid build quality and has a strong metal base with alloy casters. This seating solution feels durable and extremely agile, especially on frictionless surfaces.

It's made from earth-friendly materials, which is an added plus for all those who are conscious about the environment.

Features and Comfort

During our testing, we found that the Autonomous ErgoChair Plus is exceptionally comfortable. After working non-stop for long hours, there was no pain or stiffness. You can stretch, lean backward, and tilt without worrying about falling off the edge.

What's great about this ergonomic office chair with lumbar support is that its back has responsive webbing that is denser in some places. This allows the chair to adjust to the natural curvature of the spine, ensuring optimal comfort throughout the day.

It comes with a 26° recline and 11 lockable positions. With adjustable height, armrests, and tilt, you can customize the ErgoChair Plus according to your needs.

The chair's precise suspension allows for even weight distribution, which aids in better blood circulation.

What We Like

We've crowned the Autonomous ErgoChair Plus the best chair with lumbar support for several reasons. These include the following:

  • Dynamic webbing mesh back
  • Constructed from Earth-friendly materials
  • A good degree of recline
  • Many adjustable features
  • Durable build
  • Great price

What We Didn't Like

Although the ErgoChair Plus is a fantastic chair, there were a couple of things that didn't sit well with us, such as:

  • It took a long time to get this chair delivered; and
  • The chair isn't suited for tall and heavy individuals.

Overall, the ErgoChair Plus offers fantastic value for money. It is comfortable and has a decent lumbar support that will assist in keeping your back straight during long working hours.

2. Autonomous ErgoChair Recline

After hearing a lot of good things about the Autonomous ErgoChair Recline, we had to get one to see whether it would solve our backache problems.

Build Quality

During assembly, we noticed that the build quality was excellent. Even the alloy casters feel solid!

Features and Comfort

After having great first impressions, it was time to put the ErgoChair Recline to the test.

When you first sit on this chair, you'll realize that it offers a top-to-toe solution. It has a headrest, lumbar support, armrests, and leg rest, allowing you to lounge in comfort during recline.

With an adjustable headrest and responsive mesh, you don't have to worry about your spinal health. The chair adjusts to the natural curvature of your spine, ensuring good comfort all day long. You get an 18° of recline, allowing you to move freely and safely without straining your back.

This office chair with good lumbar support comes with two levers, allowing you to customize the seating solution to your needs. We noticed that it was possible to maintain a good posture throughout the day with the Autonomous ErgoChair Recline.

What We Like

The Autonomous ErgoChair Recline earns the title of the "best ergonomic office chair with lumbar support" for many reasons, some of which include the following:

  • Adjustable armrests, a headrest, and a leg rest
  • Solid build quality
  • Extremely comfortable seat cushion
  • Good range of motion
  • Great price

What We Didn't Like

As with any product, there are some drawbacks. The following are a few things we didn't like about this fantastic office chair with lumbar support:

  • It has a limited recline; and
  • The chair starts to squeak upon heavyweight.

3. Herman Miller Aeron

The Herman Miller Aeron is one of the most popular office chairs in the world, which is why we had to check out whether the hype was real.

After unboxing and using this seating solution for a week, the Aeron didn't disappoint, earning itself the title of the "best office chair with lumbar support."

Build Quality

Herman Miller has put a lot of thought into designing the Aeron. It has one of the best build qualities we have seen in a long time. This office chair with lumbar support has a clean design.

The Aeron is made from high-quality plastic and mesh upholstery. Every piece, during assembly, slid into place, making it extremely easy to assemble.

Features and Comfort

When it comes to comfort, this chair with good lumbar support uses 8Z Pellicle mesh material for the cushion.

Although the company mentions that it's supposed to provide a feeling that you're floating, we felt like the seat was too firm. Some people may like it that way, while others may not.

After using the Aeron for a solid week, we realized that the seat frame made the entire sitting experience uncomfortable. Due to the lack of seat depth adjustment, we just couldn't get it out of the way.

The Herman Miller Aeron uses the same 8Z Pellicle mesh for the chair's back. It has a natural curvature that accommodates the spine perfectly. The material is breathable, which means that there is no overheating or sweating.

Since the armrests are attached to the back of the chair, this ergonomic office chair with lumbar support ensures that your arms are comfortable at all times, regardless of the posture.

You can adjust the seat and the arm's height from the levers provided. Unfortunately, there is no back height adjustment, something we were expecting given the chair's premium price.

There is a tilt function with tension adjustment and lockable positions. You even get a forward tilt option, allowing you to focus on your work without straining your back.

What impressed us the most was how the chair is designed to move with you. No matter the position you're in, the chair provides the right amount of support.

Plus, the caster wheels were sleek and rolled smoothly on our studio's surface.

After testing this office chair with lumbar support, there were a few things that stood out for us, such as:

  • High-build quality
  • Nice recline function
  • Forward seat tilt option
  • Adjustable lumbar support
  • Good warranty

What We Didn't Like

Although the Herman Miller Aeron earns the title of the "best office chair with lumbar support," there are a few things that we didn't like about this seating solution. Some of these include the following:

  • The seat frame gets in the way;
  • It has an uncomfortable seat cushion;
  • The chair comes in three different sizes;
  • There is no seat depth adjustment; and
  • You don't get a back height adjustment.

4. Sihoo M90D

However, after reading what the customers had to say about the brand, we had to give it a try.

Build Quality

When the Sihoo M90D arrived at our doorstep, we couldn't wait to unbox it. The mesh back has a gorgeous pattern, something that most manufacturers do not focus on.

With a metal base, alloy casters, and a gas cylinder for height adjustment, the Sihoo M90D is a durable seating solution that is easy to assemble.

Features and Comfort

After unboxing the Sihoo M90D, we moved it to the editing department, where we put it to the test for the entire week. During our testing, this office chair with lumbar support felt comfortable.

The seat cushion is firm while offering a degree of softness that makes the entire sitting experience pleasurable. With an adaptive lumbar support, the chair adapts to the natural curvature of the spine, helping alleviate pain and stiffness in the lower back.

You can raise and lower the armrests depending on your preferences. What's great about the Sihoo M90D is that you can move the armrests out of the way, allowing for more comfort. Plus, the alloy casters made it easy to move around on hard surfaces.

There are a lot of customization options. You can adjust the tilt, play around with the height, and even recline. After using the Sihoo M90D for a week, it earned itself the title of the "best desk chair with lumbar support" and secured a spot on this list!

What We Like

There were a few things that we liked about the Sihoo M90D, and these include the following:

  • Breathable mesh back
  • Adjustable lumbar support
  • Good seat cushion
  • Great adjustability

What We Didn't Like

If we had to mention one thing that we didn't like about the Sihoo M90D, it would be the assembly process. The chair was extremely challenging to assemble, and we had to call some of our team members for assistance!

5. X-Chair X4

When looking for the best ergonomic office chair with lumbar support, we were expecting to see Autonomous, Herman Miller, and a couple of other renowned furniture manufacturers.

However, most of our readers recommended trying the X-Chair's X4. To be honest, we didn't even know about the brand, so we decided to check it out.

Build Quality

Our first impression when we unboxed the package was, "Wow." This office chair with a lumbar support has a stylish design, and assembling it was a breeze. After 10 minutes of DIY, the X4 was ready for use.

The build quality is solid. It is a heavy chair made from premium quality materials, and the alloy wheels offer stability during movement.

Features and Comfort

The X4 is the most comfortable office chair with good lumbar support that we've had the pleasure of checking out.

With DVL (dynamic variable lumbar) that moves with your back, the X4 ensures optimal comfort throughout the day. Unfortunately, you cannot extend, raise, or lower the lumbar.

Besides the lumbar, the optional headrest and armrests are also extremely comfortable. The option that we selected came with a memory foam cushion, which made the entire sitting experience enjoyable. It was soft and firm at the same time while providing sufficient support to the hips.

The SciFloat Infinite Recline matches your specific body weight, allowing fluid motion throughout the day. According to the furniture manufacturer, this feature helps improve blood circulation and energy levels.

Whether you're tilting backward or forward, the chair moves with you without you even realizing it. It also comes with all of the standard options, including tilt lock, tension adjustment, and seat adjustment, among many others.

Since the X4 promotes free movement, the armrests are also moveable. You can adjust them according to your needs. This seating solution has a pneumatic height mechanism that allows you to adjust the chair's height by a generous five inches.

What We Like

Below are a few things that stood out for us, earning the X4 the title of the "best desk chair with lumbar support":

  • Integrated lumbar support
  • Hands-free adjustments
  • Premium quality materials
  • Comfortable seat cushion
  • Many adjustable features
  • Easy to assemble

What We Don't Like

During testing, we discovered a few things that affected the entire seating experience. These included the following:

  • The lock settings were a bit flimsy;
  • You have to pay money for the optional headrest; and
  • The DVL lumbar support could be a bit too aggressive for some individuals.

It’s important to understand that even if you get an ergonomic office chair with lumbar support, a sedentary lifestyle can still lead to many different health problems. You must also invest in a standing desk. It'll help you to remain active and productive throughout the day.

An ergonomic chair offers many benefits, including maintaining a good posture and increased blood flow. All of this contributes to improved productivity in the workspace.

What is an Ergonomic Chair?

Ergonomic chairs are chairs that are designed to be adjustable to the needs of the individual using them. Along with being associated with health benefits, they also directly correlate to improved productivity and concentration.

The adjustable parts of an ergonomic chair are usually the chair's height, seat depth, and lumbar support. These flexible parts are all designed to keep you in a healthy sitting position.

What is an Ergonomic Chair?

How Does a Lumbar Support Feature Work?

Lumbar support is something that supports the lumbar region of the body. This region is frequently referred to as the lower back and can come under severe strain when sitting incorrectly. A lack of lumbar support can lead to poor posture as well as spinal issues.

A lumbar support feature on an ergonomic chair works by filling in the extra space between the lower back and chair. This helps to maintain the natural "S" shape of the spine while also providing support. The provision of support relieves pressure from the spine and back muscles. Due to pressure being reduced, the individual using the chair is going to be more relaxed and comfortable.

Without good lumbar support in office chair, the back's support can become fatigued, which often leads to one slouching. Slouching is extremely bad for the spine. It can cause permanent damage to one's spine and posture.

Common Types of Lumbar Support

Fixed Lumbar Support

Fixed Lumbar Support

An adjustable office chair with lumbar support can be adjusted in any manner. Leather or lower-end office chairs commonly feature fixed lumbar supports. Office chairs with fixed lumbar support tend to be more ergonomic than those without it. Since each person's spine is custom-made, incorrect positioning or protrusion of the lumbar may be counterproductive.

Adjustable Lumbar Support

Individuals can adjust the depth and curvature of adjustable lumbar supports manually to fit their anatomy better. Lumbar support is usually adjustable in an ergonomic office chair with lumbar support nowadays. The lumbar support can be adjusted in height, location, depth, and firmness to target the precise region of the back.

Dynamic Lumbar Support

Support that alters in firmness and thickness as you adjust your posture is always available. Dynamic lumbar support can have a variety of benefits if it is properly implemented since it will adjust automatically to the fluctuations of your body. There are fewer lumbar support office chair models with three separate pieces of the backrest that adjust to one's posture, and the majority come with full-length backrests.

External Lumbar Support

External Lumbar Support

External cushions and head cushions are available as an alternative to the lumbar cushion built into the black computer chair. The company also offers dedicated office chair cushions as a substitute for lumbar pillows.

Lumbar pillows for gaming or office chair lumbar support are typically cheap pillows designed to add support for the back, but as they do little after a while, they should be discarded after a while. Dedicated lumbar support pillows with various size and shape options for each body type can be highly ergonomic.

How to Have a Proper Sitting Posture with Lumbar Support

Even with minimal lower back support, the human spine can maintain its natural curvature without the seat back for long periods of sitting. Instead, most people slouch forward when sitting for a long time. As a result, the curve in the lower back goes in the opposite direction, which strains the lower back structures in that direction and causes the slouch.

How to Have a Proper Sitting Posture with Lumbar Support

Ideally, an office chair adjustable back should have lumbar supports flush against the small of the back. A portable lumbar support's shape is designed primarily with one end being placed up and the other down. The following benefits should be provided by lumbar back support when placed correctly:

  • A correctly aligned neck, shoulders, and hips will result in a stable body
  • The lower spine maintains its natural inward curve

As the lower back is supported most by a backflush, the back must be flushed. A good back support system should preserve the spinal column's natural position. It should also not emphasize the curve to the point where it makes the spine feel unsupported.

FAQs

Are lumbar supports on office chairs a good idea?

Are lumbar supports on office chairs a good idea?

With an ergonomic lumbar support chair, any discomfort can be alleviated, and you will be encouraged to sit correctly, reducing stress on these areas. In addition to filling in the gap between a sitting surface and your lower spine, lumbar back support promotes better posture by encouraging your spine to curve inward naturally. This occurs naturally as your spine curves toward your belly. Supporting the inward curve of the spine will result in a more natural posture.

What is the importance of lumbar support that is adjustable?

Correct sitting posture is more difficult to maintain without lumbar support. Supporting the natural curvature and alignment of the lumbar spine requires more work on your lower back muscles. After prolonged sitting, the muscles that hold your spine in place weaken, and you tend to slouch.

The muscles surrounding the spine will be spared too much stress with a chair with proper lumbar support. Desk jobs that require most of your day to be spent sitting are particularly important for this support.

What is the best place for lumbar support?

What is the best place for lumbar support?

Ensure your chair is strategically positioned, so it supports your lower back and your upper back and neck. Chairs with elbow supports are recommended. Neck strain can be avoided with this. Ensure that your elbows stay at a 90° angle when the support is in place. Be sure that your knees are also straight. Use a footrest if needed for shorter people to elevate the feet. You should look straight ahead at the computer while seated in your reclining desk chair.

Office chairs have lumbar cushions that should fit flush against the lower back (where the lumbar is); therefore, the lower lumbar cushion should be mounted near the bottom of the back support. As long as lumbar back support is used correctly and in the right setting, it should provide these benefits:

  • A healthy alignment of the ears, shoulders, and hips is maintained
  • The lower spine maintains its natural inward curve

Are lumbar supports effective in reducing lower back pain?

Your office chair may not provide enough lumbar support for your neck, which may cause you pain. But an office chair with adjustable lumbar support can help you remove pain. Neck pain will also result when the head and spine are aligned correctly; if your spine suffers from unsupported lumbar discs, you may also experience neck pain.

The spine and spinal discs are subjected to more stress while sitting than while standing. Consequently, prolonged sitting in a slouched position could result in back pain.

You should select an ergonomic chair for upper back pain that supports your lumbar spine's natural curve. A rolled towel or another cushion placed between your lower back and the chair may be sufficient if your chair lacks good lumbar support. Your spine needs to be supported, not just cushioned when you sit in your chair.
