Height you need

At 6'4", most people need a desk near 46 inches when standing, measured in work shoes, and at 6'6" near 47. At 6'0" that drops to about 43.5 inches, and at 5'9" to about 41. Arm and torso length shift these by about an inch. The desk height calculator gives your own range for sitting and standing.

Two-stage vs three-stage

Three-stage legs extend further than two-stage legs, which starts to matter once your standing height passes about 47 inches. The two-stage frames on this page top out between 45.3 and 48 inches with the top fitted. The Desk Pro 3-Stage reaches 52.7 inches, leaving headroom for users over 6'5" or anyone on a walking pad.

Stable at full height

A desk is least stable at the top of its range, which is exactly where a tall user works every day. Dual or triple motors, wide feet, and a load well under the weight rating all reduce wobble. Test it at your own standing height, with monitors and arms mounted, within the return window.

Depth and knee room

Tall users need more than a high top end. Longer arms call for a desktop at least 29 inches deep, so the monitor sits at a comfortable distance rather than too close. When seated, check knee clearance under the frame and keyboard, since long thighs run out of room before the desk runs out of height.

FAQs

A good desk for a tall person reaches past your standing elbow height with room to spare, stays steady at the top of its range, and has a deep top. At 6'4", that means a frame that reaches about 48 inches or more. Three-stage frames, which extend past 52 inches, cover users well above that.

At 6'4", set the desk near 46 inches and test between 45 and 47 inches in your work shoes. That keeps your forearms level and your shoulders relaxed. Arm and torso length shift the number, so adjust half an inch at a time during the first week.

At 6 ft, most people stand comfortably with the desk near 43.5 inches, testing between 42.5 and 44.5 inches. Every desk on this page reaches that height, so at 6 ft the more useful checks are stability at full height and whether the top is deep enough for a comfortable monitor distance.

At 5'9", start near 41 inches and test between 40.5 and 42 inches. That falls between the 5'8" and 5'10" rows of most height charts, so begin at the lower number and raise it half an inch if you catch yourself leaning forward or rounding your shoulders.

The desks on this page reach between 45.3 and 53.5 inches with the top fitted. The two-stage frames top out at 45.3 to 48 inches, the Desk Pro 3-Stage at 52.7 inches, and the Desk Pro AI at 53.5 inches. Compare figures with the top on, since frame-only numbers read about an inch lower.

Most tall people only need a three-stage frame above about 6'5", or when they stand on a walking pad or in thick-soled shoes. Up to 6'4", a working height near 46 inches fits most two-stage frames on this page. Three-stage legs add travel at the top, which leaves headroom above your elbows.

An electric desk suits tall people better because the gap between sitting and standing height is larger. At 6'4", the desk travels about 15 inches or more on every switch, which is slow and tiring with a hand crank. Memory presets also take you back to the exact height without measuring again.

Your ideal desk height is your elbow height with your arms bent to about 90 degrees and your shoulders relaxed. Stand in your work shoes and measure from the floor to the underside of your forearm. The ergonomic desk height chart lists starting points up to 6'6", and arm length can shift them by about an inch.

Look for a maximum height above your standing elbow height, a frame that stays steady there, and a top at least 29 inches deep. Dual or triple motors and anti-collision help with stability and safety. Memory presets matter more than usual, because the travel between sitting and standing is long.

Tall desks can be stable at full height if the frame has enough motors and the load stays well under its rating. Wobble grows as the legs extend, so typing force and monitor arms matter more at 46 inches than at 30. A rigid frame and wide feet help the most.

Tall users do best with a top at least 29 inches deep, which keeps a monitor at a comfortable distance. Width depends on your screens: about 53 inches fits two monitors, while 59 to 77 inches leaves room for a third screen or a laptop dock. Longer arms make a shallow top feel cramped quickly.

Sitting desk height for tall people usually lands near the top of the 24 to 30 inch range most adults fall in. Adjustable desks rarely struggle here, since the lowest points on this page run from 24.25 to 29.4 inches. Set your chair first with your feet flat, then match the desk to your elbows.

Yes, but a walking pad raises you by its deck height, so add that to your usual standing height. At 6'4", the total can go beyond what two-stage frames reach. A three-stage frame with a maximum above 52 inches leaves room for the treadmill and still clears your elbows.

A monitor arm usually helps tall users more than a keyboard tray. With the desk set to elbow height, the screen often sits too low, so raise its top edge to about eye level with an arm or riser. A keyboard tray lowers your hands and is rarely needed once the desk height is right.

Choose a weight rating with plenty of margin, because heavy loads wobble more at full height. Every standing desk lists a lifting capacity, and on this page it runs from 176 lbs on the Desk Core to 450 lbs on the Desk Pro AI. Heavy multi-monitor setups belong on the higher-rated frames.
