ASSEMBLY GUIDE
FAQs.
Don't see the answer to your question?
What exactly is the WorkPod Core — is it a mini pod or a full ADU?
The WorkPod Core sits in its own category. It's a prefab mini office pod designed specifically for backyard use — smaller than a full ADU but far more functional than a basic shed. At 80 sq. ft., it gives you a private, insulated, fully wired workspace without the permitting headaches that come with larger structures. Think of it as a tiny office shed that's actually built to work in, not just store things.
How much space do I need in my backyard for the WorkPod Core?
The WorkPod Core footprint is about 9' x 9'. For comfortable access and airflow around the unit, we recommend having an area roughly double that — around 18' x 18'. That said, it fits in most standard backyard setups without a problem.
Do I need a permit to install a mini office pod in my backyard?
In most cases, no. The WorkPod Core is designed at 80 sq. ft. — a size that falls below the permit threshold in the majority of U.S. states and localities. That said, zoning rules vary and do change, so we always recommend checking with your local building department or HOA before installation. Better to spend 10 minutes confirming than deal with it later.
Do you offer assembly services?
We currently have a contractor network available in California and can assist with assembly service anywhere in California. Soon to be available in other regions.
Is the WorkPod Core a good small backyard office option for remote workers?
It's what it was built for. The WorkPod Core gives you a dedicated space to work that's separate from your home — no background noise from family, no blurred line between work and personal time. With solid soundproofing, year-round insulation, and pre-wired power, it functions as a proper small backyard office from day one. A lot of our customers say it changed how productive they feel working from home.
What makes the WorkPod Core sound-insulating?
The walls use a honeycomb paper inner layer that handles both soundproofing and heat resistance. All glass is tempered and 5/16" thick, which adds another layer of acoustic insulation. The result is a small office shed that actually blocks out lawn mowers, kids, and street noise — not just muffle them.
What surfaces can I install the WorkPod Core on?
Most common surfaces work fine — brick, concrete, gravel, grass, pavers. The foundation is engineered to support the pod's weight plus an additional metric ton without ground fixtures, so you're not limited to a perfectly prepped concrete slab. That makes it a genuinely flexible tiny backyard office option for most homes.
Can I install it on a slope?
Flat ground is ideal, but the WorkPod Core's foundation handles mild slopes well. Just keep it under 5° (roughly 4.5 inches of rise) and you'll be fine. Beyond that, we'd recommend leveling the ground first.
How hard is it to assemble? Do I need a contractor?
It's designed to be DIY-friendly — no special tools or construction experience required. Most people get it done with two people in a day. If you'd rather have professional help, we have a contractor network available in California and can connect you with assembly services. For other regions, feel free to reach out and we'll help you find options.
Can I move the WorkPod Core if I relocate?
Yes — the WorkPod Core can be disassembled and reassembled at a new location. It's one of the real advantages of a prefab tiny office shed over a permanent structure. You're not locked in.
How does the power connection work?
There's a simple external port that connects to your home's existing power supply. Run an outdoor-rated cable from your home to the pod and you're set. The maximum wattage is 2,750W — enough for a full workstation, monitor, lighting, and a small AC unit simultaneously.
Can I add heating and air conditioning to my small backyard shed?
Yes, the WorkPod Core has built-in inputs for an HVAC unit. A 5,000–6,000 BTU air conditioner with heat is the right size for the space and keeps it comfortable year-round. The optimal operating range is 65–90°F. We can provide a technical drawing to ensure the install doesn't interfere with internal wiring.
How is the WorkPod Core different from a regular garden shed or tiny ADU?
A standard garden shed gives you storage. A full tiny ADU is a permitted dwelling with plumbing — expensive and complex to build. The WorkPod Core lands in between: it's a proper small ADU-adjacent structure with real insulation, soundproofing, power, and ergonomic interior space, without the permit burden or construction timeline of a full ADU. It's built to work in, not just occupy.
Can the walls support shelves and fixtures?
Yes — the walls handle standard fixtures like shelves and frames without issue. Just keep in mind that power lines run inside the walls, so avoid drilling deep in areas near electrical runs. When in doubt, we can share the interior layout so you know exactly where to mount things safely.
What's the weight capacity of the foundation?
The foundation supports up to 2.3 tons including the pod body itself — well above what any normal office setup would require.
Is there a free trial period?
We don't offer a trial period for the WorkPod Core. Because assembly and setup vary depending on your space and environment, a standard return trial isn't practical. That said, we encourage you to reach out with questions before buying — we'd rather you feel confident going in than have any surprises after delivery.
Do you provide building plans for HOA or permit documentation?
Yes — we're happy to provide full building plans and technical drawings if you need them for an HOA submission, local permit application, or personal records. Reach out to us and we'll get those over to you.
What's the difference between the WorkPod Core and the full WorkPod?
The WorkPod Core is the compact version — 80 sq. ft., designed as a mini pod workspace that fits in tighter backyards and skips most permitting requirements. The full WorkPod is larger with more interior room and customization options. If you need just a focused work-from-home setup, the Core is the practical pick. If you need more space for meetings, studio work, or multiple people, the full WorkPod is worth considering.
Do you supply building plans?
We are happy to provide building plans and other details if you need them for your own paperwork. Please help to find in here, If you have any questions feel free contact us at [email protected] for more information.
What can I actually use the WorkPod Core for besides a home office?
Quite a bit. The most common use is a dedicated small backyard office for remote work — but customers also use it as an art or music studio, a tutoring space, a photography studio, a podcast recording room, a yoga or meditation room, or a quiet reading space. Because it's fully insulated and wired, it works for anything that needs a private, climate-controlled environment. A few customers have even used theirs as a small content creation studio. The main limit is your imagination and the 80 sq. ft. footprint.
How long does shipping take, and what does delivery look like?
Delivery timelines vary by location, but most orders within the continental U.S. ship within a few weeks of purchase. The WorkPod Core arrives as flat-packed panels and components — not a fully assembled unit — so it ships via freight rather than standard courier. You'll get tracking information and a delivery window in advance. Assembly typically takes one day with two people once everything arrives on site.
Does the WorkPod Core come with a warranty, and what does it cover?
Yes — the WorkPod Core comes with Autonomous's standard product warranty covering manufacturing defects and structural components. If something arrives damaged or a part fails under normal use, we'll make it right. For full warranty terms and what's covered, you can check our Warranty Policy page or reach out directly to our support team at [email protected] before purchasing if you have specific questions.
