Recently, a surge in the interest in how to set up home offices was sparked by a number of people working from home these days. If you too have moved from a corporate setting to a humble home office in the last few years, you have seen eclectic new design trends around building home office environments, including everything from a functional office desk to setting up the room.

Decide on the Desk That's Best for You

A desk (or at least a convenient working surface) will be the first functional office décor that you need to consider when building your new home office. We are calling it a functional home office desk because it needs to look good and work for you as well. Next, you need to decide what inspirational office decor you want around that desk. However, if your desk is small and you plan to work from home frequently, consider upgrading your desk to any of these functional office furniture options.

Traditional Desk

Traditional desks are the ones you’re probably already using and can buy from any store. These are does that have standard designs that suit any need. There are usually some storage options included; otherwise they may include other features like keyboard trays, file drawers, and even or place to put the printer.

A flat surface and two ends are all you need. As a typical way to achieve this, filing cabinets are used as ends, and a flat door is attached to the top. A big working surface and many storage drawers make this a great choice. Putting it together is very inexpensive as well.

Standing desks

If you sit at your desk for eight hours or more daily, consider getting an adjustable standing desk. A height-adjustable desk allows you to switch between sitting and standing during the day. Alternating your work position during the day this way is healthier for your posture and back and productivity. You can see more standing desks on our website. They include standalone desks or a monitor arm desk mount that can raise and lower the work surface as a whole.

How Do You Plan on Using The Desk?

If you want to buy a new functional office desk, it's a good idea to decide what it's for:

  • Do you need to keep office supplies like pens, pencils, and paper (for example)?
  • Can you put the CPU somewhere on your desktop computer if you use one? For example, will it have a keyboard tray that you can pull out?
  • If you use your laptop or monitor at your desk, can you see it comfortably if it's far back?
  • Can you use a PC desk for reading and writing?
  • Does your desk need to contain other computer-related items (such as a printer, scanner, or router)?
  • It would help if you got something that can accommodate your work from home office needs and requirements.

We also find that functional office desks smaller than about 48″ wide by 24″ deep are too cramped to work comfortably.

Positioning Your Desk

Positioning Your functional office desk

Once you’ve narrowed down on the right functional office desk, the next task is to figure out how to set it up in your home office. In other words, you need to see how you should place it. First, identify what type of mentality you would like to be in when you are working. For example think about your surroundings as you work – are you comfortable facing a wall straight on or would you prefer facing the window?

If you don’t prefer facing a wall, you should either place your desk facing the windows or position it face towards the room. However, some people prefer facing a wall since it helps them from being distracted. So you’d better plan it accordingly if you’re a person like that or if you have no other functional office desk layout options. If that’s the case, placing a favorite picture or art piece on the wall facing you could lead to a positive impact and provide you with a better view.

Space Constraints

You should have at least 3 feet of space between the desk and the wall (on the side where you will sit) if you plan on floating the desk in the center of the room. As a result, you don't feel trapped when pulling out your chair.

You should also maintain three feet between the desk and the wall, preferably on the side where you will be seated. This permits greater flexibility during your work day without needing to move too many things around in order to get up. It will also help you to feel more relaxed, less confined especially in a smaller workspace. There is no ‘best way’ to set up a desk in a small room; however we suggest placing it in a diagonal layout. Our blogs offer tips on how to place feng shui desks.

Adding the Right Chair

Adding the Right Chair

If you're going to sit in your chairs for hours every day, it must be comfortable. Your Home Office set up would be incomplete without an ergonomic chair. Such chairs are adjustable, and fit your body so that you will be able to work more comfortably.

Usually we are pretty big fans of buying functional office furniture online; however, consider making this particular chair purchase in person if possible. Even if you do purchase it online, check to see if that particular chair has a return policy if it’s not a good fit.

Two people can’t use the same ergonomic adjustable chair, because what’s comfortable for you may not be comfortable for someone else. To know if you would like a particular chair, you should try them out. The following are three important criteria we consider when choosing an office chair:

Wheels are necessary on the chair

You need to pull the chair out and put it back in multiple times a day, so having it handy just makes your life much easier. Ensure that the wheels on your chair are large enough to roll easily if you have carpet or an area rug underneath. You may want to get a chair mat as well. If your chair doesn’t have wheels, consider a rolling computer workstation, so you push the desk away, not the chair.

Height adjustment is essential

Height adjustment is essential

Please check the seat height to ensure the desk and seat are the right heights. When you're sitting, your elbows should be at 90 degrees apart when you type. And your feet need to fit flat on the ground. Consider getting an adjustable keyboard and mouse stand if your current desk model doesn’t allow this.

Desk chairs should have armrests

Until recently, we weren't aware of this. Despite sitting in a comfortable, ergonomic, comfy chair (without armrests) in your current office for a long time, you still feel restless. Sometimes motorized standing desk converter or electric desk converter works by giving you the right height adjustments without making too many changes to your desk layout.
