How do I get rid of mold and/or algae?
How to prevent mold and algae:
1. Make sure that the temperature inside your home is suitable for your plants. The best average temperature to grow your plants is 64 to 75F (18 - 24C). At that temperature range plants have the most favourable conditions to achieve full growth and outrun mold and algae.
2. Use (don’t remove) the white U-shaped lids. These white lids cover the soil surface leaving no room between the lid and soil for the mold to thrive. Also, it covers most of the soil surface from the light so algae will not develop.
3. If occurring mold or algae is very aggressive you may scrape off, but gently, so as not to damage the plants or seeds. The plants (seeds) will be okay to grow and use after the mold has been removed.
4. As a little pro-tip, wipe off the mold with a paper towel and add a layer of cinnamon powder. If mold appears often, cinnamon could be added as a preventative measure when new pods are plugged in.

How should I prune my plants?
If your herbs are outgrowing your Smart Garden you might want to use some parts of them or cut them back to encourage "bushier" growth. Here’s how to do it:
1. Start pruning if your plants have at least 2-3 pairs of full grown leaves.
2. Be sure to leave at least 1-2 pairs of full grown leaves on the plant, otherwise it may die.
3. Cut the stem with sharp scissors right above the node (the place where leaves come out).
4. From every cut 2 new shoots should appear and your plant will grow back again. This should help to extend the lifespan of your plant.
What is the life cycle of plants in the Smart Garden?
Different plants have different life cycles. Most plants in the Smart Garden grow for 2-3 months, chili peppers and some blooming plants up to 6 months. The lifetime of a plant also depends on the light available, your room’s temperature, and the way you look after the plant. Plants started in winter months may take longer to grow.
What is the shelf life of the plant pods?
The pods can be stored for about two years in dark, dry and cool conditions.
How long do plants take to sprout?
Most plants sprout within 1-2 weeks, with some fruiting plants taking up to 3 weeks in some cases. If your plants have not sprouted within 3 weeks contact customer service who will help you out with any problems.
When and how do I add water?
Use the water float indicator to monitor the overall water level at any time. When it hits the bottom and you can no longer bob it up and down with your finger, then it's time to refill the tank. The water tank lasts for about 2-3 weeks, depending on the plants you’re growing, but you can definitely fill up the tank sooner if necessary.
How should I clean and maintain Smart Garden 9?
We recommend cleaning the unit before inserting a new pod. Simply pour out any remaining water from the unit and rinse the water reservoir carefully with warm (not too hot) water. You may add a little amount of detergent as well. Rinse again thoroughly and dry it gently with a paper towel.
The Smart Garden 9 is machine washable, but do not use temperatures higher than 140°F / 60°C. Please make sure to remove the lamp before putting the unit into the dishwasher. We do not recommend putting the U-shaped lids into the dishwasher. You can watch how to open the water tank to clean it here
